Acoustic Tests for Buildings - Noise Testing Building Regulations Part E
Noise pollution can blight any construction project, applying sufficient sound insulating materials can minimise the affects of noise pollution by appointing a specialist engineer.
Noise and Acoustics Testing Monitoring for Buildings
An acoustic test or sometimes known as a noise test or sound testing will be needed if a building is to comply with Part E of the current Building Regulations in the UK. The representative institution in the UK is the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) and the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC). Surveys carried out by companies, engineers and contractors should, ideally be accredited by these organisations.
Find out more about the test, and how it is carried out below. If you need further information about these services, please contact us.
Where acoustics or sound insulation may be problematical for new or existing properties it is recommended that project developers and housing development managers find help and advice from a qualified consultant to monitor noise and vibration sounds.
Sound and noise reduction measures can prove costly in buildings and builders need to demonstrate compliance with Building Regulations Document E 2003, with projects undertaken.
In addition there are a number of requirements outlined in other documentation such as BB93, and the Code For Sustainable Homes, HTM 08-01 and BREEAM schemes for example, which also need to be considered.
How is a Sound Insulation Test Carried Out?
Essentially the test consists of two parts:
Airborne Testing:
An airborne test provides measurements of the resistance to the passage of airborne sound through a separating (party) wall or floor in a property. The test is conducted using a high powered mufti-directional loudspeaker located in the property which creates a steady sound level in the room. A microphone is them used to measure the difference in level between the source room (the room with loudspeaker installed) and the "receiver room" (the room adjacent to, or below, or above the room used as the source). The airborne sound differences are recorded.
An Impact Test:
This test measures the resistance to the passage of the "impact" sound, using a tapping machine, this machine contains 5 weights. The machine is placed on the floor of the property under test. The different weights are then allowed to drop to the floor, in each case, the measurement is recorded by measuring the sound level by using a microphone in the room below where the tapping machine is located.
Sound Testing Conditions:
In order to achieve accuracy between separated constructions there are certain requirements that are to met. The premises must have mains power either at 110V or 230V, a generator must not be used. Any rooms and surrounding areas should be vacated, and all doors and windows closed. There should be no surrounding noises which may interfere with the test for example radios, power tools, plant or machinery, outside groundwork's or personnel talking, or moving about in the premises.
What sort of Consultant Surveyor Do I Need?
Ideally the contractor should be affiliated with UKAS Accreditation or (The United Kingdom Accreditation Service), this is the national accreditation body recognised by government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, noise testing, and inspection and calibration services. This body also oversees air testing services.
If you require Acoustic/Sound Tests for a commercial building or a home (dwelling)in any of the areas outlined below please provide details of your requirements using our contact form. We will be glad to provide a quote and timescale for an inspection.
