Asbestos is a mineral which can be found in many homes and commercial building constructs in the UK. Examples include, Soft Asbestos used to lag pipes and boilers, Asbestos cement, this was used mainly for corrugated roofs of sheds, buildings and garages, as insulation board which was used for fire-proof cladding and acoustic panels, and thermal insulation boarding.

Uses of asbestos were many and varied, the product was also used for sprayed coatings, and can be found on soffits, fire protection barriers (fire-stopping) as part of building construction.

Energy assessors are trained to identify asbestos, and report the presence of such products as a potential hazard in an energy assessment report. They are not authorised to order its removal, however they will report the presence of the substance to the home owner or commercial building owner.

Any works undertaken must be in accordance with the code of practice which requires special methods for removal.
