Asbestos is a mineral which can be found in many homes and commercial building constructs in the UK. It is recommended that removal of the substance is preferred, however, areas of low risk, where it is unlikely to be disturbed, does not necessarily mean the order of disposal as it prevents a low risk of dust particle dispersion. It also has other special uses as a product for roofing and fire-proofing. The properties associated with asbestos resulted in its wide use in the 1970's as part of building construction. Subsequently, since this era it has been recognised as a potentially hazardous substance, certain types of asbestos have been banned for use in the construction industry.
The main types of asbestos encountered are: Crocidolite also known as blue asbestos, Amosite also known as brown asbestos and Chrysotile also known as white asbestos. Brown and blue asbestos are more dangerous than white asbestos.
Asbestos products can change colour dependent on the manufacturing process used or in the treatment process during manufacture. Due to the common nature of the products, they can be found in almost any form for building construction purposes.
Examples include, Soft Asbestos used to lag pipes and boilers, Asbestos cement, this was used mainly for corrugated roofs of sheds, buildings and garages, as insulation board which was used for fire-proof cladding and acoustic panels, and thermal insulation boarding.
Uses of asbestos were many and varied, the product was also used for sprayed coatings, and can be found on soffits, fire protection barriers (fire-stopping) as part of building construction.
Energy assessors are trained to identify asbestos, and report the presence of such products as a potential hazard in an energy assessment report. They are not authorised to order its removal, however they will report the presence of the substance to the home owner or commercial building owner.
Be in no doubt, asbestos is a hazardous substance, if you think that asbestos is present or if you are working where you think the substance is present you should leave it undisturbed and seek professional advice from a licensed asbestos removal company, and the Health and Safety Executive.
Government grants may be available from your local council, or local authority who can offer advice to households and businesses wishing to dispose of asbestos waste products.
Hazards
The presence of asbestos may not necessarily create a health risk, however, a risk arises from the release and inhaling asbestos fibres by disturbing or breaking up the asbestos product or through heavy wear and tear. It is strongly recommended not to tamper with: soft asbestos, asbestos insulating board, or any kind of sprayed asbestos coated surface.
A professional company which is licensed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) should be used for the safe removal of any asbestos substances. The Asbestos Removal Contractors Association can provide details of local contractors in your area to handle removal. Any works undertaken must be in accordance with the code of practice which requires special methods for removal.
Sampling
There are companies that can sample and analyse suspect materials, however there may be a charge for such a service.
Asbestos Dumping
Should you discover any asbestos that has been dumped you are advised to contact your local council (local authority).
General Rules
Asbestos materials that are considered to be in good order and state of repair should be left undisturbed. If repair or removal is to be considered you should consult a specialist.
Safe Disposal
Specialist contractors are licenced for the disposal of asbestos waste. It is recommended that you locate a consultant in your local area for the safe disposal of asbestos as per current guidelines and legislation.
