What is Biofuel?
Biofuel refers to organic matter which is derived from a wide range of fuels known as biomass. CEN/TC 335 is the committee developing the standards and associated conversion technologies applicable to all forms of solid biofuels within Europe, including wood chips, wood pellets and briquettes, logs, sawdust and straw bales.
Solid Biofuels
These consist of primarily wood, sawdust, grass cuttings, domestic refuse, charcoal, agricultural waste, dried manure as examples.
Biomass Crops
The most popular UK biomass crops are short rotation coppice, willow and poplar, Miscanthus (Elephant Grass), Reed Canary Grass and Oil Seed Rape.
Bio-Diesel
Many vehicles can run on BioDiesel (for cars, lorries and trucks) as a substitute to normal diesel (DERV). Bio-Diesel can be blended to suit the vehicle manufacturers requirements. Bioethanol can be blended with petrol and used with existing car engines in low concentrations. Investment in biofuel plant continues, and in the UK British Sugar now produces biofuel derived from sugar beet. E85 is an 85% blend of bio ethanol, which is mixed with 15% of traditional petrol. E85 ethanol is used in engines modified to accept higher concentrations of ethanol. E85 has an octane rating higher than that of regular petrol (97 octane). There are plans to introduce E85 pumps in forecourts in the UK in the coming years. Some supermarkets are already selling E85 in the UK.

Alternative fuel grants are available for the provision of refuelling equipment in the UK. In order to qualify the alternative fuel must include hydrogen, E85 bioethanol, natural gas and biogas. Further information about the scheme can be found on the Energy Saving Trust website.
