Biomass fuels constitute a sustainable energy resource. This section outlines the principles behind Biogas and Biofuels including products, suppliers of wood fuels like wood pellets, wood chip renewable fuels for biomass wood burning boilers and stoves, and contractors available in the UK. Renewable Energy Resources the use of Green Energy to help define a sustainable future.

What is Biomass?

Biomass refers to organic matter which can be incinerated in order to produce heat and power. Biomass fuels include material such as timber or specific crops that are grown for processing as biomass fuel to provide energy to operate a facility providing district heating for example.

Biomass is considered a sustainable fuel and, on the whole carbon neutral. This is because when the fuel is burnt, carbon is released as part of the incineration process, and is offset by the carbon present in the organic matter by photosynthesis when the crop was grown. Carbon neutral ideals require that it is necessary to adopt the sustainable use of organic matter, plants and trees (wood chip) as an alternative fuel, in so doing a further crop is planted to sustain the cycle. This ensures that any carbon is reabsorbed into the environment, this then forms a continuous cycle for the carbon content.

The use of fossil fuels many argue amounts to a detriment in the atmosphere and the environment as a whole. The use of such fuels over time will almost certainly result in a climate change which can be partially averted by the introduction of sustainable energy measures. Energy efficiency can be improved through the use of sustainable energy resources which include new technology i.e. the use of green energy, solar panels, photovoltaic PV panels, wind turbines, solar heating systems and biomass sustainable energy biofuels, marine, tidal technologies for large scale applications. Over time new technology will begin to directly effect energy generation. For the home owner small scale electricity generation can be achieved, subject to certain conditions.

CEN/TC 335 biomass standards

CEN/TC 335 is the committee developing the standards and associated conversion technologies applicable to all forms of solid biofuels within Europe, including wood chips, wood pellets and briquettes, logs, sawdust and straw bales.

Biomass

Solid Biofuels

These consist of primarily wood, sawdust, grass cuttings, domestic refuse, charcoal, agricultural waste, dried manure as examples.

Biomass Crops

The most popular UK crops are short rotation coppice, willow and poplar, Miscanthus (Elephant Grass), Reed Canary Grass and Oil Seed Rape.

Biomass crops are short rotation energy crops that are harvested on a cycle of anything from 2 to 20 years, including herbaceous crops (woody, perennial, rhizomatous grasses) that are harvested every year.

Short rotation energy crops

Short rotation coppicing of willow is common, including poplar. Short rotation forestry, a number of tree species have been proposed for use as a crop.

Other products known as biomass include straw, grain husks, forest products, waste wood and animal wastes such as slurry and chicken litter can be used.

Biomass Boilers

A biomass boiler uses a sustainable alternative source for its fuel. Typically this would include wood chips, wood pellets or cereals which are burned to provide power and heat. In a domestic home a boiler which uses biomass can provide heated water for a central heating system and domestic hot water supply for your home. Biomass boilers can be supplied for domestic and commercial purposes, which usually provide a cheaper solution for heating spaces, and is more environmentally friendly. A biomass boiler is easily installed, and can also be fitted as a retro-fitted replacement for an existing gas or oil boiler installation. As with any appliance, biomass boilers should be installed by a qualified engineers.

Biofuels and Biogas

Biofuels and Biogas fuels are derivatives of Biomass the source of which is primarily agricultural and domestic waste also anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable products like biomass, manure, sewage, municipal waste, and green waste products. Biogas is also produced as landfill gas (LFG) as a by-product of organic waste.
