Cogeneration Systems - Biofuel, Biogas
Cogeneration is the term used to describe a power generating plant such as a power station which can provide both electricity and heat at the same time, the process is also known as combined heat and power or CHP. CHP is commonly used for energy recycling for both domestic and commercial applications.

CHP depends on its efficiency by using the heat generated for use on location or to provide power to plant in close proximity. Efficiency of this type of plant will be diminished if the heat product is transmitted for use over great distances, in this case pipework must be insulated to a high standard to prevent heat losses occurring. In contrast, electricity can be transmitted through cables, and over longer distances with lower losses.

Commercial cogeneration systems are capable of providing hot water and electrical power for local industry and local communities and towns. CHP plant uses often comprise of systems such as: Gas turbine applications whereby the waste heat produced in the flue gas can be recycled through heat exchangers. Natural gas is used as the fuel source for the equipment.

Micro CHP
Micro CHP also known as "Micro cogeneration" is used mainly for domestic (home) applications. Dependent on the installation used for generation of heat and power to the home, solar or wind powered devices, it is possible in some cases to export electricity back to the grid, this excess can be sold back to the power grid, micro cogeneration used in this way can be cost effective, through payback, and has lower CO2 emissions than some photovoltaic (PV) panel installations.
Mini CHP
Mini cogeneration is ideally suited to small to medium business applications. Up to 500 kW can be generated using this method.
Commercial CHP schemes can usually be part funded through grants and loans to help towards the cost of the capital expenditure of the CHP equipment and plant supplied. This extends also to community heating schemes, and the public sector for projects involving schools, hospitals and local authority buildings.
