Grey and Black Water - Sewage Treatment and Recyclable Water Systems for Household and Business Water Treatment and Filtration

Waste Water Recycling and Sewage Treatment

Water that is considered as "waste" can often be recycled and put to good use. Many domestic homes and business premises can save money on utility bills by the adoption of "Grey Water" and "Black Water" recycling techniques. In the domestic home many household appliances and sinks discharge the water to the drain, for example: baths, showers, washing machines, dishwashers and bathroom/kitchen sinks are considered "Grey Water". Toilet waste is referred to as "Black Water".

Water that has been collected from a household bath, shower system or hand basin and can be recycled for WC flushing using a small amount of disinfectant/biological treatment in order to make it suitable for use. The principles outlined here could easily be applied to business premises, although dependent on the size of the property the storage of wastewater would need to be up-scaled to suit the likely demand on the system. There are some disadvantages with Greywater, for example during storage the Greywater may become warm causing bacteria to multiply, this problem can be solved by the use of filtration systems and treatment of the stored greywater in the premises.

Toilet Flushing Recycling

Much of household water is used for flushing the toilet, which can be re-used in many cases. Water that is discharged from a bath, shower or sink unit can be stored and treated for re-use for toilet flushing.

The components required for the system are a pump to supply the water to the toilet(s), also mains water backup supply in the event the supply outstrips the demand on the greywater storage (tank). Contamination of the mains water supply by backflow must be avoided as part of the installation.

Toilet Composting

In some rural areas and local areas where a mains water supply is not available for toilet flushing for example id you live on a houseboat or a mobile vehicle a composting toilet may be a solution for recylcing your waste and using it as a fertiiser. A composting toilet can be used to recycle the waste which can be used as a fertiliser, they are available in different sizes to suiy the demand and capacity, there are a few methods to help decomposition, small systems rely on raking and agitation of the waste to accelerate decomposition, in a similar way to sewage treatment palnts, although on a smaller scale, a dual box system is available which is reliant on natural decomposition, this type of system has a much higher capacity.

Water Filtration for Greywater systems

Sand filters are very slow but are capable of removing fine particles from the water, the slow and constant flow of water through the filter propagates biological activity in the filtration system. The top layer of sand traps micro-organisms in the sand these bacteria and viruses digest pathogens which may cause disease in the water. Over time a film builds up on the top layer of sand, this makes an effective barrier which such pathogens find difficult to permeate.

Grey Water for Garden Use

In some cases this water may be used directly as a source of watering your garden at home. However, bear in mind the following if you are using greywater for horticultural purposes, it is not advisable to use water from kitchen sinks, dishwashers or washing machines as the contaminants are too high (detergents) etc. The soil in the garden is an effective filtration medium and provided there is not a significant amount of soap, bleach, or detergent present it can be used effectively. Note that such water should not be used for crops and vegetables.

Recycling Rainwater

For gardening purposes the best source is to use Rainwater Harvesting, to find out more and suppliers of equipment.
